Chapter One
Jeremy glanced at the bodyguards that were positioned around him as he walked through the hallways of the mall. He was not happy about the fact that his mother forced him to have the bodyguards come with him. He glared at the bodyguards and crossed his arms. He turned suddenly to enter a store and a bodyguard stopped him. Jeremy glared up at the bodyguard. “Why are you stopping me? I’m not trying to ditch you guys, no matter how much I want to. I’m going into a store, you know the reason why I came to the mall,” he said as he pushed past the bodyguard and walked into the clothing store. The bodyguards followed him into the store and two of them stood next to the entrance while the other two walked next to him, one on either side of him.
Jeremy frowned slightly and ran his hand through his shaggy, blonde hair as he looked through the clothes quietly, trying to ignore the stares and whispers that he was receiving because of the bodyguards. He stopped and turned to the bodyguards. “Back up a little alright? I feel like I can’t breathe with you guys standing there. I’m going to be fine. I honestly don’t believe that anyone here is going to try to kill me with you guys standing five feet away. So please, back up,” he said and turned back to the clothes as the bodyguards back up a few feet.
Jeremy found a few pairs of pants, a few shirts, jackets, and scarves and walked up to the cashier, setting the clothes down on the counter. He smiled softly at the cashier as she asked how he was today, “I’m alright, and you?” The cashier blushed a little and mumbled a soft okay as she rang up his clothes. Jeremy held out his credit card to the cashier, who took it and ran it through the machine and handed it back to him and set the receipt on the counter with a pen for him to sign. As Jeremy signed the receipt, the cashier placed his clothes into a bag and set it on the counter and took the receipt back. Jeremy smiled and took his bag and walked out of the store and immediately bumped into a girl with long brown hair, knocking her to the ground.
His eyes widened and he knelt down to help her up, “I’m so sorry. Are you alright?”
The girl shot a glare at him through her deep brown eyes and pushed his hands away, “I’m fine. Watch where you’re going next time.” She picked up her bags and stood up, walking away. Jeremy watched her walk away, shocked and slightly happy. He was happy because most people just apologize to him for being in his way, even if it was his fault, because of who he is.
Jeremy stood up slowly and stood there for a second as his bodyguards formed their box around him, the two on his sides leading him out of the mall and to his limo. The bodyguard in the front opened the door for him as he slid in, the bodyguards followed in after him and the limo drove back to the palace. When they arrived a bodyguard opened the door and the others slid out of the limo before Jeremy stepped out. He walked into the mansion and walked to his suite, set his bag down on a couch and walked over to his bed and flopped down on it quietly, thinking of the girl at the mall.
Jeremy drifted off to sleep shortly and slept until a maid walked in and gently shook him awake, letting him know that it was time for dinner. Jeremy nodded as he slipped off his bed quietly and stood up, stretching. He then followed the maid out of his room and through the maze of hallways to the dining hall. He walked in quietly and took his place in the middle of the long table, his mother at one end and his father at the other. When he sat down, a butler brought him a covered plate and set it down in front of him. He mumbled a quiet thanks as the butler uncovered the plate and walked away. Jeremy picked up his fork and started to pick at his food, taking a small bite every now and then. His mother and father ate their dinner quietly, not saying a word to each other or to Jeremy.
Jeremy cleared his throat after a few minutes, drawing his parents’ attention. “I’m sorry, I have homework to do, I must ask your permission to be excused from dinner,” he said, setting his fork down gently. His father nodded quietly as did his mother, and Jeremy quietly stood up and walked out of the dining hall. He didn’t truthfully have any homework; he just didn’t like sitting there in the uncomfortable silence. Most people outside of the family, even most of the other royalty, didn’t know that his parents were not getting along very well anymore. And with Jeremy being the heir to the throne, that little fact getting out would be not so great for publicity. Although there was a chance for him to get the public’s sympathy, there was a higher chance of him being bothered with questions of how their marital problems were affecting his mental stability and that would then raise questions about whether or not he was in proper mental condition to be the King of Castanna. So their marital problems were pretty much on the down low.
Jeremy gave a small sigh as he walked out of the palace quietly and walked to the stables. Walking in, he walked over to his horse and saddled him swiftly. When he was finished, he pulled himself up onto the horse and rode out of the stables. He led him to the gates and waited for the gate guards to open the gate for him before riding out and heading towards the forest a few blocks away from the palace. As he rode through town, he got a few stares and whispers, but he ignored them and kept riding, urging his horse into a gallop as he entered the forest and following the path quietly.
After a few minutes, he slowed his horse to a walk and dropped the reins on the saddle, letting his horse choose where he wanted to go, and relaxed, looking at the trees and plants that surrounded him as he rode in the cool, fall evening. As his horse walked down the path, his phone rang. Pulling his phone out of his pocket, he looked at the number before answering his phone. “Jeremy,” he said as he picked up the reins with one hand.
“Your Highness, your mother wishes to speak with you immediately,” a voice responded.
“I’m busy and cannot speak with her at the moment,” he said, shutting his phone swiftly and placed it back into his pocket, taking ahold of the reins with his other hand as well and urged his horse into a gallop. He led his horse through the trees, he pulled his horse to a stop as he heard many voices talking and laughing nearby. He grew interested, not being able to get out of his family’s estate very often as his parent’s didn’t want him to be exposed to the media and paparazzi until it is absolutely necessary, and led his horse in the direction of the voices.
As he reached the tree-line of the forest, he saw a public school with students outside, running around and playing games or just sitting down and talking. He watched quietly from the trees, intrigued with how public schools worked. Jeremy had always gone to a private school, feeling weird and different there. He only had one friend at his private school who knew how he felt. His school had given them that Friday off and Jeremy had planned on spending it as he normally did – avoiding his parents. As Jeremy watched the students, his phone rang again and a group of girls nearby looked over at the sound and noticed him. The girls whispered to each other and pointed at Jeremy as he answered his phone.
“What do you want?” he asked shortly.
“Jeremy Kensington! Get home now! I need to speak with you now,” his mother’s voice yelled through the phone.
“Yes mother. I’ll be home shortly,” he said, shutting his phone and putting it in his pocket. He recognized the school as the one that is a across town from his estate, and figured it would be quicker to just cut across town through the school’s yard and the two parks between here and his house rather than going back the same way he came, and he wanted to get this over with as soon as he possibly could. He then urged his horse forward and into a gallop and rode across the school’s yard, causing the students to stop and stare at him as he rode past. He ignored the stares and continued to ride. He reached his family’s estate twenty minutes later and rode up to the steps leading up to the mansion, jumping off his horse and handing the reins to a servant who had ran out to meet him. He walked into the house quietly and wove his way through the hallway maze to his mother’s study and knocked on the door quietly as he entered.
When he walked in, his mother was sitting at her desk working on some paperwork quietly. She looked up and motioned to a chair and frowned at his choice in clothing. Jeremy sat down and looked at a vase on a nearby table quietly. “Jeremy, we have quite a few things to discuss,” she said setting her pen down and folding her hands.
“Do we now?” Jeremy asked as he turned to look at his mother. “I am perfectly happy with how things are going. Well minus the fact that you force me to take the bodyguards with me everywhere I go, when I am perfectly capable of looking out for myself. Oh and that I have to attend a stupid school where no one likes me for me, but only because of my lineage,” Jeremy said as a small glare settled over his eyes.
His mother frowned. “You will continue to take them with you. You don’t know how dangerous it is outside of these walls. You,” she started before Jeremy cut her off.
“Of course I don’t know what it’s like! The only time I get out of here is to go to school or when I sneak out. I honestly hate having to stay inside the walls and the fact that I can’t go too close to the walls or gate, lest I be seen!” Jeremy said loudly.
“Don’t interrupt me Jeremy. Now, you will also continue to go to Castanna Private School; if you know what’s best for you. You should think about changing your wardrobe to something that fits your status, like suits. You don’t have wear the jacket all the time,” his mother said bluntly.
“I’ve thought it over about twenty times. I’m not going to wear suits,” Jeremy said, folding his arms. “Mother, about school, can I go to one semester of public school? If something happens and my life is endangered by going there, I will go back to Castanna Private School without a fight and I’ll stay there. I’ll come home every day after school; I won’t let anyone know my lineage. I promise. Please? One semester, just one?” he pleaded.
His mother gave a sigh as she rubbed her temples. She was quiet for a few minutes as Jeremy looked at her hopefully. “One semester, that’s it. You will go back to private school if anything, and I mean, anything happens to endanger your life,” she said, picking her pen up and started to work again.
Jeremy’s eyes widened slightly and he jumped up, hugging his mother and gave her a small kiss on the cheek. “Thank you mother!” he said, his voice filled with joy, as he smiled and rushed out of the study and rushed to his room. Once in his room, he turned on his computer and clicked open the internet. He went to his school’s chat page and logged in.
JKensington: I’m off to public school. Mom just gave me permission. I told you guys I could get her to let me go. There’s just a few conditions I have to follow to go.
KGallanburg: NO WAY!! SERIOUSLY!? How’d you do it man?
HBernam: I don’t believe it man. There’s no way your mom would ever let you go to public school. I mean you’re second in line for the THRONE. Why would you even want to go to a place like that anyways?
JKensington: Kevin, I told her that if anything happened to endanger my life I would go back to Castanna without a fight. And Henry, if you beg and plead enough, you can get what you want. It’s also just temporary for now, if I can get through this semester without dying, I may be able to stay there.
KGallanburg: I’m with you, if I tell my parent’s that you’re going, they’re sure to let me go to. I want to see how public education works. It’s supposed to be completely different than private education.
HBernam: I heard they make their own lunches because they can’t afford the school lunch or the school lunches are so horrible that you can’t eat them unless you want to die. But I’m with you as well.
JKensington: You guys are awesome! Then I guess I’ll see you both at Fort Castanna Public High School on Monday. Oh, and please don’t come in limos or in cars with drivers, wearing designer clothes. We want to try to fit in with the other students before we cause any ruckus. Just wear the school uniform and drive yourselves or something. Just act normal please.
KGallanburg: Gotcha…..gah, got to go, maid is pulling me out of my room as we speak for dinner see you on Monday!
KGallanburg has logged off.
HBernam: I’ve got to go as well. I have to go to a press conference for some big fundraiser thing my parents are hosting. See you Monday.
HBernam has logged off.
JKensington has logged off.
Jeremy smiled to himself as he shut off his computer and walked over to his bed and lay down. At least he would have Kevin and Henry there with him. He quietly thought to himself about how his new life at Fort Castanna Public High School would go. Hopefully it wouldn’t be too horrible and he would make some new friends before his mother went completely haywire and pull him out of the school before the end of the semester. He smiled softly as he drifted off to sleep, pulling a small blanket over him as he slept on top of the covers.
